My wife won this book in a raffle, considering some of the other prizes were knitted boobs, I was quite delighted!
Whats it on about?
Before reading this book I had never heard of Lily Vanilli and that was my loss. If you haven't heard of her bakery then now is your chance. I will confess I have never been to her bakery, but east London is a long way away!
So for me this book has transformed one recipe entirely and that's the vanilla sponge. I was brought up believing that all in one batters are just as good as any other cake batter, they were also so much easier. I couldn't have been taught more wrong! Following on from my revelation, I question more in baking and try new things, I would love to pretend I consider the science of it....but I don't, I mix and hope, and sometimes succeed!
This is a book of bakes that all taste great, and want you to get straight into that kitchen.
The Recipes?
They are all super easy to follow with great descriptions and reasoning behind the methods. If you are a new baker I would recommend this book for learning how to make excellent bakes. It teaches you how butter interacts with sugar and then changes helps create a rise, as well as how long to mix butter and sugar until it is fully creamed.
There are also some excellent gluten free recipes in here, again focusing on flavour and texture.
Should I buy it?
Now this book is not a must have on your shelf, it most certainly does not provide all the basic recipes that you want to cook for cake day at work, or for afternoon tea (that being said there is a great fruit tartlet recipe *insert sue Perkins saying tartlet over and over here*. But if you want to improve your vanilla sponge recipe, bake some exciting new modern recipes, and think about how cakes turn out why they do I would thoroughly recommend, I have been pleasantly surprised by this book!
8/10 - Baking book recipe, purely for the best sponge recipe ever...i'm not exaggerating.
