Oštarija Peglez'n - Lake Bled - Slovenia

We are going back to your more affordable everyday restaurants here.

We found Oštarija Peglez'n on Google, with some good reviews that spoke about great food and a homely atmosphere. In summer it is impossible to get a table without booking but in winter it is.

The atmos was lovely. First of all unlike our dining experience the night before, there were a lot of people in the restaurant. I guess this was because it was a Friday night not a Thursday and you didn't have to climb a cliff to get to it. The restaurant was filled with oddments and titbits that made it feel like a very busy house. Lots of cooking equipment, lots of bread bins, recipe books, and bags of flour. It was warm and cosy and a great place to enjoy a dinner. You could see into the kitchen just like it was an extension of the dining room, with a few hatches that reminded me of my Grandma's house.

The drinks selection was good, with a wide range of soft and alcoholic drinks that were offered in a variety of different measures.

The menu had a large choice on it. Their starters were not starters however as we had one to share, the gnocchi, and it was most definitely the size of a main course (the waiter did recommend one to share, but what if we wanted different things?). There was lots of meat and fish options, good salad options and pasta dishes. Even the fussiest family members could eat here and not complain.

The food was reasonable. I enjoyed the meal we had however was a bit disappointed with the trout that I had. I think frying fish flesh down is a thing in Slovenia, It was overdone here and the fish was dry and starting to border on rubbery. I just about enjoyed it, and would eat here again, however I would avoid the pan fried fish. It was just criminal to fry the fillets flesh down as their flavour was lost.

The starter tasted great and was bacon and cheese gnocchi with a lovely warming cheese sauce. It was served (as you can see) in a frying pan that we could serve ourselves from which was great for the starter.

The restaurant was good. It was warm and welcoming. A nice relaxing place to have dinner, where you weren't rushed. Families were enjoying the evening, children were welcome and the food was enjoyable. If you are a big fan of fish, my advice would be avoid the pan fried section, the rest looked great!

Price for the two of us €58 which included starter, main, and 50cl of red wine. For a remote location like Bled where your restaurant choice is limited to hotels, this is a refreshing change.

So for the score I would give it a solid 6/10.
