London - The Ivy - Market Grill - Brunch

Updated: Jan 3, 2019

We had brunch at The Ivy Market Grill in Covent Garden today.

No booking required for 2 people, turned up at 12:30 and were seated straight away. Their brunch starts at 11 with lots of options for a more typical brunch or more lunchey options if you hate the idea of mixing lunch and breakfast.

We were seated downstairs which had a lovely atmosphere for two people, it was a casual environment with a touch of elegance. Really nice and easy to sit and chat and enjoy a meal. The lights were dimmed which meant I said Good Evening to the waiter before realising it was midday, potentially a good thing to change especially mid winter where its so dark all the time anyway!

I had the Eggs Royale (pictured above, apologies for the quality, the dim lighting doesn't suit my very old iPhone 5s, which interestingly still has a reasonable battery life), which had exactly the right amount of hollandaise.

Hollandaise is easily the make or break of any Eggs dish, if there's too much you roll out of the restaurant, sometimes you have soggy bread as an accompniant to the sauce, or sometimes you have so much its more of a hollandaise broth with chunks of meat floating in it. Luckily today was no such day, however I personally felt the chips and the muffin were too much, but I am not known in my family for eating a lot of food so really it depends how hungry you are.

Coffee - as you will begin to learn we are big coffee drinkers! We love drinking coffee and its a very important part of our day. Sometimes restaurants try to be fancy with their coffees offering flat whites, macchiatos, lattes, double lattes, espresso, cappuccino, insert other Italian words, but here it was simple, "coffee and cream" or "Black Coffee" their coffee was good, lovely and strong with a good depth of flavour. The coffee took at least 10 minutes to come, but you can't rush good coffee! I would assume they used filter coffee to allow it time to brew and it was all the better for it.

For 2 people for brunch and coffee (+£4 service charge) it was £36, which for covent garden on a Saturday morning is pretty darn reasonable. Other options which were cheaper included pancakes with fresh fruit and honey and avocado and halloumi on toast.

All in all a great easy place to eat, not too expensive with lots of options for those fussy people who hate food with any non conventional flavour (burger, steak and chips etc).
